It is a small set of published dates that quietly determine when the water is yours, when the marina is staffed, and when the neighborhood turns into a race course. The through-line for this post is simple. Tipton Lakes runs on a schedule that is more specific than most residents realize, and the summer stretch from August through mid-September is the densest part of that schedule. Here is what to plan around.
August 8 Belongs To The Swimmers
The single loudest date on the summer calendar is Saturday, August 8. TRI Columbus is located in the Tipton Lakes neighborhood, brought back by the Columbus Running Club, and the triathlon event is a 500m swim in Tipton Lakes (time trial start) followed by a 13.5 mile bike through the country and a 5k run. The duathlon swaps the swim for an opening 5k.
Two things to know if you are not racing. First, the swim leg happens in your lake, which means the marina area at 6000 Tipton Lakes Blvd is the staging ground and access will look different than a normal Saturday morning. Second, this is the revival of a beloved local event. TRI Columbus was formally known as the Columbus Challenge Triathlon which ended in 2018. After a seven-year gap, the field skews toward hometown competitors and Columbus Running Club members, and the finish area is a good excuse to walk down and cheer even if you have never watched a triathlon in your life.
If you are hosting out-of-town guests that weekend, the practical detail is the interstate distance. The race is 8 minutes from the I65 Columbus/Bloomington exit. That is the kind of specific you can text a friend on Friday night.
Marina Hours, Read Carefully
The marina is the center of gravity for a Tipton Lakes summer, and its 2026 hours are worth reading with a little care. All hours are weather permitting, and beginning May 9 the marina runs Monday through Friday, 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. The office and marina phone lines are two different numbers, 812-342-8522 and 812-342-6423 respectively, which matters if you are calling about a pontoon reservation versus a permit question.
A few things residents sometimes forget:
- Boat permits are annual. Motorized and non-motorized boat permits are available for purchase for the 2026 season at the Association office. If you loaned a paddleboard to a neighbor last September and never got it back, this is the reminder.
- The lake is private, and so is the fishing. Because Tipton Lakes is private, State of Indiana fishing licenses are not required, and the lakes are open only to Association members and their bona-fide guests. Four guests may accompany each member while fishing. Bigger groups need a call to the office first.
- Night fishing has a lighting rule. Bright lights are not permitted for night time fishing. A dim headlamp is your friend.
- The Marina beach has a supervision rule for kids. While at the Marina beach area, children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by a person at least 16 years of age unless a written parental permission slip is on file at the Association Office.
The social anchor for the marina is the annual Summer Kick-Off, which last year drew a full crowd with food trucks, face painting, games, inflatables, and a band from 3 to 7 pm at the Marina. If you are new to the neighborhood, it is the fastest way to meet twenty families in one afternoon.
The Ten Dates That Shape Your Weekends
Here is the schedule that catches even long-time residents off guard. The Association's aquatic team treats the lakes on a fixed rotation, and while treatment does not close the water, it does change what you might want to do on it. The 2026 lake treatment days are April 13, May 11, June 1, June 15, June 29, July 13, July 27, August 10, August 24, and September 14.
Read that list next to your own calendar. The clustering is telling. Treatments run every two weeks through the peak season and only stretch out again in September. If you like to plan a big open-water swim, a fishing morning with kids, or a first ski run of the season, the low-traffic Saturdays fall between those Mondays. The August 10 treatment lands two days after TRI Columbus, which is a coincidence worth knowing because it means the water gets a hard reset right after several hundred wetsuits pass through it.
The rest of the season fills in around a few other dates the Association has published for 2026: the Annual Meeting on April 13, the Marina opening on May 3, and the Summer Kick Off event on May 16, with resident-only social gatherings continuing through the fall. That is a real cadence, not a vague promise of community.
Off The Water: TLAC And The Harrison Ridge Loop
Not every summer day in Tipton Lakes is a lake day. When the humidity flattens the afternoon or the treatment truck is out, two land-based options do most of the work.
The first is the Tipton Lakes Athletic Club, which functions as the neighborhood's shared gym and racquet facility. TLAC brings together fitness, tennis, pickleball, golf, training, and community in one place in Columbus, Indiana. Pickleball, in particular, has grown into one of the fastest-growing communities at TLAC, with clinics and drills-and-skills classes for players still figuring out the third-shot drop. If it has been a couple of years since you toured the club, it is worth a fresh visit. Members have noted that recent ownership has invested in equipment and the physical space, with a welcoming atmosphere and meaningful improvements to the facility.
The second is Harrison Ridge Park, the four-acre neighborhood park tucked inside the community itself. Located on Coles Drive at 47201, it is a developed neighborhood park with a shelter, basketball court, handball court, playground, tennis courts, and hosts the Come Out & Play Summer Playground Program. The shelter is first come, first served rather than reservable, which is either a bug or a feature depending on whether you are the family who arrived at 9:30 or the one who arrived at 11.
The park is also the trailhead residents use most often for a walkable loop. Tipton Lakes Trails runs through Terrace Lake, Opossum Creek, and Wolf Creek in Harrison Ridge Park. Bring a leash. The park is a welcoming spot for dog owners, with a dog-friendly trail and designated obstacles that provide physical exercise and mental stimulation. The regulars know to come in the hour before sunset, when the West Lake side of the loop gets the best light and the fewest bikes.
If you want to link the two, the athletic club's programming and the park's open hours line up cleanly. A morning tennis clinic at TLAC and a late-afternoon loop through Harrison Ridge is a serviceable Saturday when the lake is being treated.
Weekend Guests, In One Text Message
