Why Grandview Lake?

What Makes Columbus, Indiana a HiddenGem for Lake Living?

Oct 28, 2026 · @Chris Braun

I've been a boater my whole life. So when I decided to leave New York City and move back to the Midwest, I'll admit I was worried. Could a lake in Indiana really give me the water, the community, and the lifestyle I was looking for?

More than 11 years later, I can answer that with total confidence. Grandview Lake, just outside Columbus, gave me a true lake community where boating is a way of life, along with far more to do than I ever expected.

Here's what makes it one of the Midwest's best-kept secrets, from someone who lives onit full-time and helps people buy here.

A private lake built for boaters

Grandview Lake is considered southern Indiana's largest and cleanest private lake. It covers roughly 400 acres and is ringed by wooded hills and about 7 miles of hiking trails, so it feels tucked away even though town is minutes away.

Because it's private, the lake has sensible rules that keep it safe and uncrowded:

  • Pontoons up to 25 feet and ski boats up to 21 feet

  • Wave runners and sailboats welcome

  • Up to four powered watercraft per lot owner

On any summer day you'll see water skiers, wake boarders, and wake surfers. Our sailing club races every other Sunday in the summer, and anglers are out early since the lake is stocked every year.

But if you ask me, the most popular activity is the early-evening "cocktail cruise."Neighbors load up their pontoons, idle slowly around the lake, wave to friends on their docks, and watch the sun go down. It's the moment that sells most people on lake life.

A social calendar most neighborhoods would envy

What surprised me most after moving from New York was how quickly I felt part of the community. Grandview is genuinely inclusive, and there's always something happening:

What Makes Columbus, Indiana a Hidden Gem for Lake Living?

Full-moon pontoon tie-ups. Every full moon, boats raft together in the middle of the lake for an evening on the water.

Memorial Day and Labor Day breakfasts that bookend the summer.

Fourth of July weekend. Fireworks over the dam on July 3rd and a live band on thedam on July 4th.

Newcomer mixers hosted at residents' homes, so new owners meet people right away.

Clubs for every interest, including garden, book, sailing, and ski clubs.

My advice to every new owner is simple: do as much as you can that first summer. Say yesto the tie-up, the breakfast, and the mixer. That's how a lake house becomes a lake home.

Lake life with a world-class town next door

Most lake communities make you trade amenities for seclusion. Grandview doesn't.

  • Golf and dining five minutes away. Harrison Lake Country Club offers excellent dining and a top-notch golf course.

  • Great restaurants in town, including favorites like Henry Social Club.

  • An architecture capital. Columbus has one of the finest collections of mid-century modern architecture anywhere, including the iconic Miller House. The AmericanInstitute of Architects has ranked it sixth in the nation for architectural significance, alongside cities like Chicago and New York.

  • Brown County close by. Nashville, Indiana, is a short drive away for more good restaurants and shows at the Brown County Music Center.

It's the rare place where you can spend the afternoon wake surfing, then be at a great dinner or a concert that night.

Beautiful in every season:

  • Summer gets the headlines, but the quieter seasons may be my favorite part of living here full-time.

  • Fall is incredibly peaceful. Boats are still out on the water, and the trees surrounding the lake turn magical shades of red and gold.

  • Winter brings some glorious days for walking around the lake, and it's especially serene after a fresh snowfall. The lake used to freeze over in a cold winter, but these days it no longer does.

  • Spring brings the lake back to life, as docks go in and seasonal neighbors start returning for another summer.

Who owns here, and what it costs:

Only about 35% of Grandview residents live here full-time like I do. Many owners spend their summers at the lake and head south to places like Florida for the winter. Others live in Indianapolis, Louisville, Cincinnati, or towns in between and spend as many weekends here as they can.

That's possible because Columbus sits right on I-65:

As for price, it's hard to find a home on Grandview under $1 million, though they do come up. Recent sales have reached as high as $2.65 million.

One thing buyers should know: as a Realtor who lives on the lake, I often hear about homes before they come up for sale. Several of my deals have come together without the house ever hitting the market.

My advice before you buy:

  • Don't assume the main body is best
  • Most buyers start out wanting a home on the "main body" of the lake. The views are wonderful, but the water off your shoreline can get rough with all the boat traffic, which makes swimming and floating less relaxing.
  • A home in a no-wake cove is often the better fit, especially for families with youngchildren or dogs who love to swim. You still have the whole lake a short ride away, withcalmer water right off your dock.
  • Buy the lot, not just the house
  • I always tell my buyers to weigh the lot as heavily as the house. Before you fall in love with a kitchen, look closely at:
  • Slope of the lot down to the water, The driveway, especially in winter. How much shoreline you'll have.  Sunrise or sunset views, winter sun or the lack of it. Tree cover and how much light it lets in.    A house can always be updated or renovated. The lot? Not so much.

Why Grandview is still a hidden gem?

Most people who live outside Columbus don't even know Grandview Lake exists, and honestly, that's part of its charm. The limited number of properties gives it an exclusive feel, and homes here tend to stay in families for generations. It's wonderful to watch kids who grew up on the lake come back to raise their own families here.

If I could talk to the version of me still in New York, wondering whether a Midwest lake could measure up, I'd tell him to stop wondering. It does.

Thinking about lake living in Columbus? Whether you're looking for a full-time home, a summer escape, or a weekend retreat, I'd love to show you around. Because many Grandview homes change hands quietly, the best first step is a conversation.
